Chelsea sealed their spot into the fifth round of the FA Cup as they beat Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
A brace from Michy Batshuayi in the first half and a Marcos Alonso free-kick in the second secured the Blues’ progress into the next round and will now await their next challenge in the competition.
Antonio Conte made changes to his side as Batshuayi was brought into the side after he was dropped against Arsenal midweek. Danny Drinkwater was drafted in and Cesc Fabregas and Callum Hudson-Odoi were given spots on the bench. Caballero kept his place as Courtois remained out, alongside Alvaro Morata.
Newcastle started well and put the Blues under pressure in spells and Caballero was forced into action on several occasions, one from Jonjo Shelvey. The midfielder guided his shot goalwards to the near post but Caballero matched it and pushed away from danger.
But just before the break, Chelsea took the lead. An exquisite ball from Pedro found Eden Hazard who then played it off to Marcos Alonso. The Spaniard stabbed it to Michy Batshuayi who had an empty net in front of him and he delivered, he tapped home to give the Blues the lead.
He wasn’t done there though, a minute later he was at it again. Eden Hazard played the forward through and the Belgian fired he shot goalwards, it deflected off Newcastle captain Lascelles, and it bounced into an empty net to double the home side’s lead, minutes before the interval.
Chelsea went close twice in the early stages of the second-half. Pedro had the first chance, his curling effort on the edge of the box went just over. It was his fellow Spaniard Marcos Alonso with the second opportunity. The wing-back struck a volley goalwards but Karl Darlow in between the sticks for Newcastle saved well.
Danny Drinkwater had the next chance as he received a ball from Pedro on the edge of the penalty area as Batshuayi slotted him through but the midfielder dragged his shot wide of the goal.
Davide Zappacosta then earned Chelsea a free-kick with 20 minutes to go after being brought down. Marcos Alonso stepped up and whipped it over the wall and extended the home side’s lead in the fourth round.
Eden Hazard was then brought off for Ross Barkley as he made his first home appearance for the Blues.
The youngsters were also given a run out as Ethan Ampadu made another appearance and Callum Hudson-Odoi who has impressed all season in the youth side, got his chance with ten minutes or so to go.
Michy Batshuayi was denied a hat-trick as Darlow denied the Belgian with his feet after a clever piece of skill. He was once again kept out as another shot was kept out by the Magpies’ keeper.
It ended 3-0 as Chelsea head into the next round of the FA Cup, and they will find out their next opponents when the draw commences on Monday evening.
