Thibaut Courtois has confirmed that a new contract deal at Chelsea ‘is close’. He also states that if he signs, he will be urging fellow Belgian Eden Hazard to do the same.
In quotes reported by Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur this morning, Courtois has confirmed that a decision will be made within three weeks.
The Blues stopper said “A deal is close. Do Eden and I encourage each other? Yes. He will say ‘if you sign, I will sign’ and I say the same to him.
“Of course this can be looked at a number of ways. Does this mean that his decision now rests on what Hazard decides to do? Does it mean that he is waiting on transfer activity this month to decide? The fact he states that a deal is close though, remains somewhat encouraging for Chelsea fans.
He goes on to talk about his fellow countryman “With the money he will raise, you can buy five players but none of them will be like Eden. It would be like Barcelona losing Lionel Messi or Real Madrid losing Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Finally, the 25-year old confirms when he will be making his decision “It has just turned the new year, so we will wait a few weeks and then sit around the table. I’m happy at Chelsea and a deal is close.”
The Chelsea board are still confident that both players will sign their new deals and that Courtois confirming, will trigger his Belgian counterpart to do the same.
