The January transfer window has begun, and Chelsea will look to get a couple of deals completed in the next month with a Premier League campaign still to complete, and Barcelona awaiting in the Champions League.
The summer window wasn’t one we should look back on fondly, it was poor, and by that many are impressed to see us sit in second spot coming into the new year.
However, the only way to mount a challenge with leaders Manchester City is by strengthening in positions which are currently depleted of quality and numbers.
The position which was voted as an area which needs to be improved on was the left wing-back role. Marcos Alonso is the only recognised player in the role, with Baba Rahman still recovering and Kenedy set to go out on loan, potentially to Newcastle.
The Spaniard has had a bright start to the season, making 21 appearances and scoring five time league. It is not an easy job for Alonso, starting week in week out due to no reinforcements behind him, albeit Davide Zappacosta starring in the role occasionally.
Alex Sandro is the obvious target, the club tracked him all summer but a move failed to materialise. Reports are suggesting Juventus are lining up a replacement, leaving Sandro with a potential pathway to leave Italy.
Alex Telles could be the key to all of this. Chelsea and Juventus are set to battle for the wing-back however if the Italian side get the Brazilian, who has already gathered 10 assists this season, Sandro could come to West London.
However, Alex Telles could be a preferred option due to the value of the player being significantly lower than his national team-mate Alex Sandro.
Another area in which Blues fans hoped to see strengthened was in the wing roles. Chelsea currently have Willian, Pedro and Charly Musonda in the role when we decide to switch to the 3-4-3 system but many want to see this area bolstered.
Riyad Mahrez has been heavily linked with the club, and Kante and Danny Drinkwater could persuade the Algerian to make the move to West London after spending time with the winger at Leicester. The Blues are favourites to sign him in the upcoming window.
Another linked has been Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey, who has shone for the Bundesliga side this term, and looks to be an exciting prospect.
However, according to reports, the director has said that they had not received any bids and they have no thoughts of selling him.
Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace has been another name suggested as a target for the club.
It was widely claimed that Chelsea were considering a huge bid for the winger however there has been no further developments on the move.
Chelsea will look to add to positions wherever necessary but as seen on Deadline Day with Davide Zappacosta, expect the unexpected. Prices will be inflated as there isn’t much time to replace players, so just be patience in the next month.
